Students

“Spell to Write and Read” is valuable for students of all ages and abilities. Gifted students hungrily eat up the rules and readily apply them to more advanced words. SWR is a life saver to students who have failed or struggled to learn with inconsistent and incomplete phonics rules. They are greatly relieved to discover a logical pattern to English. In addition “Spell to Write and Read” is highly successful for students with visual difficulties and dyslexia. This program has been shown to raise reading scores in all types of learners.

Multi-Sensory

“Spell to Write and Read” uses a multi-sensory approach, which encompasses hearing, speaking, writing, and seeing. SWR is especially beneficial to auditory learners who have struggled with the visual nature of reading. “Spell to Write and Read” allows all learners to solidly learn the connection between the sounds of the language and their visual representations. It is appropriate for all learning styles, allowing students to use their strengths while strengthening their weaknesses.

Phonograms and Spelling Rules

“Spell to Write and Read” is built around the 70 basic phonograms and 29 spelling rules identified by Anna Gillingham. The phonograms and spelling rules account for 99% of the 2,000 most frequently used English words.

Learning Logs

A great strength of “Spell to Write and Read” is the student created learning logs, which are references books that explain why each word is spelled in a particular manner. The log consists of spelling lists and reference pages written by the student. Words are simply marked to draw attention to multi-letter phonograms and spelling rules.
